Foods and Diets that Can Make You Smarter

Author: Rita Li

When it comes to survival, two of the most important things someone thinks about are food and water. Today, let’s talk about one of them: food. How is food related to the brain and eating what types of food will make people’s brains smarter and healthier?

The human brain functions the best when people consume nutritious food and maintain a healthy diet. Besides all of that, food is also related to how people feel in everyday lives. Research done by Harvard University shows that 90 percent of serotonin – a neurotransmitter that helps to regulate a person’s appetite, sleep, pain, and mood – is located in one’s gut. Therefore, not only can the gut digest food, but it can also directly influence your mood and working habits.

60 percent of the human brain is composed of fat. According to an article written by Healthline, half of that is made up of omega-3-fatty acids. Omega-3-fatty acids are being used to build and repair nerve cells. Nerve cells have a positive impact on learning, memories, and preventing mental illnesses such as depression. Studies have also shown that omega-3-fatty acids are directly related to the absence of neurodegenerative disorders, such as Alzheimer’s disease. This type of fat found in the brain can be found in food like salmon, trout, tuna, etc. Thus, eating these types of fish can impact the brain’s omega-3-fatty acids and cells.

Another type of food suggested by scientists is berries. An article written by Medical News Today mentions that many berries contain a component of flavonoid antioxidants. Antioxidants help reduce stress, improve communications between nerve cells, increase the plasticity of the brain. By actively maintaining brain functions, antioxidants prevent the brain from aging.

In conclusion, it is important for us to pay attention to what type of food we consume and know how they are related to the our health. Food such as fatty fish and berries can really benefit both our bodies and the brain, thus, making you healthier and smarter.
