Video Conferencing Tool -- Zoom

The Future of Video Conferencing

by Bo Wu

Due to the fear of COV-19 spread around the world, most companies in the United States have asked their employees to work from home. The demand for video conferencing and collaboration tools has never been greater. Among all the video conferencing tools available (Zoom, Skype, Cisco Webex meeting, Google Hangouts, etc),   Zoom is Ranked #1 in customer reviews and is currently the most well known and widely used.

CEO of Zoom, Eric Yuan, even suggested that the new call for video will lead to a “fundamental, permanent shift in how people work.” Zoom has seen a massive increase in usage since the spread of the virus started, bringing in more active users than ever before. Some of the most exciting features of Zoom Meetings include:

  • Easy adoption with WebRTC technology
  • Join from anywhere on any device
  • Access robust security solutions throughout
  • Built-in tools for screen sharing
  • HD video and audio calls
  • Support for up to 1,000 video participants and 49 videos
  • Meet securely with role-based user permissions
  • Streamlined calendaring services with Outlook and Google
  • Built-in recording and transcripts
  • Team chat both for groups and one-on-one messaging
  • Access to extra features like webinars, chat, and phone

With the latest release on April 30, 2020 version 5.0.1 (23502.0430), Zoom adds some cool features below:

  • In this expanded view, you’ll now see upcoming meeting details with a single click to start or join a meeting
  • You can customize your background picture
  • Elevating Search makes it easy to find contacts, messages, files, or chat channels
  • Click on your image to manage your settings, set your presence with a status message, and switch between Portrait (narrow) and Landscape (wide) view options

These improvements, as well as those of other web conferencing software, may do exactly what Eric Yuan believes: changing the dynamics of how people work.
