How To Get Past Writer’s Block

By: Michelle Hua

Everyone’s had to write before, whether it be for a school project, for work, or even just for fun. And when writing, most people have experienced a moment of writer’s block. It may be frustrating, but there are several ways to combat this situation.

What you should do:

  • Take a walk

When you have writer’s block, changing your environment and getting active can help. Think of ideas while you walk as well.

  • Brainstorm

Keep thinking about new ideas. Get all your thoughts out, even if you think they sound bad. Once you have all your options out in front of you, look for the best ones that you can use to keep writing.

  • Read

Read a book. This can help you to relax, while taking in new content that can help you to continue writing.

  • Listen to music

Listening to music can boost your mood and get your creative juices flowing. You can even create a playlist of songs just for helping you overcome writer’s block.

  • Write

No matter what, just keep writing. When you’re stuck, the quality doesn’t matter. Just keep writing until you can think of new ideas, then go back and refine what you’ve just written.

What you should not do:

  • Wait for ‘inspiration’

If you sit there to wait for new ideas to come to you, you’ll get nowhere. Inspiration is definitely good, but you need to actively find ways to continue.

  • Procrastinate

Don’t procrastinate. Waiting for the last minute to try to write will result in bad ideas and poor quality, and the result will seemed very rushed.

Writer’s block is difficult to overcome, but it’s not impossible. Be active in finding your ideas, and you’ll be able to get over to it.
