Las Vegas: Deadliest Shooting in Modern History

By Patrick Xu

On October 1, a gunman opened fire onto a country concert from the 32nd floor of a Las Vegas hotel, killing 59 and injuring hundreds of others, making it the deadliest mass shooting in modern history. The shooter has since been identified as Stephen Paddock of Mesquite, Nevada, who was 64 years old and whose motives are unknown. Investigations by authorities have brought up dozens of firearms, and in attempting to retrace his steps to ascertain his motives behind the massacre, authorities have found that he had gone on a massive arms purchasing spree in the months leading up to the attack as well as researched various outdoor concerts. Paddock’s past reveals little on his insanity either; he had a girlfriend, Marilou Danley, and was a millionaire from investing in real estate. Furthermore, his brother Eric described Stephen as “successful” and claimed that he took care of his loved ones, such as by giving money to help his family live comfortably. ISIS has claimed responsibility for the attack, but officials say Paddock had no ties to the group.

In the wake of the attack, people have been active; there is a GoFundMe page that has raised almost $11 million to help victims, blood has been donated, conspiracy theorists are working overtime, and people across the world are contributing an outpouring of support through the internet. Victims of the shooting are also starting to regain control of their lives, such as Tina Frost, who recently emerged from a coma after being shot in the head.
