The 2024 NFL football season commenced on a high note on 5 September, with a highly anticipated matchup between the Kansas City Chiefs and Baltimore Ravens at Arrowhead Stadium. This game rematch the AFC Championship from last season which the Chiefs won 17-10 Kansas City led by Patrick Mahomes came into the season opener as the defending Super Bowl Champions and looking to win third straight and their sixth in six years. The Ravens, however, wanted revenge on the playoff collapse and be a leader to begin the season.
The Chiefs took it 27-20 after a close game. The primary beneficiary was always Mahomes who threw for touchdowns and made classic plays. Lamar Jackson of the Ravens, who was being pushed by Kansas City’s heavy defense, played a little bit and kept the game in suspense from both passing and rushing. Baltimore’s overhauled defense had some promising elements but was not able to contain Kansas City’s fast offense (their rebuilt receiving corps) that benefited from offseason trades for speed and depth.
Kansas City’s defence led by coordinator Steve Spagnuolo helped hold Jackson in check most of the game. A few crucial defender plays broke the Ravens offense and held on to pull ahead for the Chiefs late in the fourth quarter.
The contest not only played two super teams; it also dictated the NFL season, stressing the Chiefs’ strength and the Ravens’ chances to win the AFC. They both are considered playoff candidates throughout the season, and this opener lived up to its billing of energy-fueled games and dramatic moments.
