Should You Get a Pet?

By: Andy Chen

For many households, arguments over whether or not to get a pet are common. Parents often complain that pets are expensive and require heavy maintenance, and they’re not wrong — but with that being said, why can a pet be worth taking care of?

  • Companionship
  • Better health
  • Increasing exercise
  • Stress relief

1. Companionship

It’s true that if you have a pet dog or cat, you have to play, walk, and feed them constantly — but is this really a negative aspect? For most pet owners, pets aren’t just a responsibility; rather, they are friends whom you can confide in.

2. Better Health

On average, pet owners maintain lower blood pressures, cholesterol levels, and triglyceride levels. Additionally, pet owners tend to be fit and social, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).3. Increasing exercise

3. Increasing Exercise

Pets can increase their owner’s motivation to exercise; since pets like dogs need exercise, pet owners have the opportunity to go on runs or hikes to kill two birds with one stone.

4. Stress Relief

If you’re having a busy, mentally-draining day, playing with your pet can be a great way to take a break or unwind. Assuming you’re financially and emotionally prepared, getting a pet may just open up a relaxing, happier lifestyle.
