Music’s Impact on Your Daily Life

By: Andy Chen

For most students, music is ingrained in their daily routines — more than 90 percent of students listen to music for an average of 32 hours a week, according to Nielsen Music 360. This prevalent influence reflects the large impact music has on students’ lives in a variety of ways. From emotional expression to stress relief, and more, music is seen to benefit students in a myriad of ways.

Firstly, music plays an important role in helping students express and manage their emotions. The most notable aspect of music is that it serves as a useful coping mechanism for extreme events — if something overwhelmingly negative occurs, listening to calming or happy music can help students accept or move on from the event. Essentially, music can serve as an outlet for students experiencing negative emotions.

Furthermore, listening to music provides a variety of psychological health benefits. Most notably, music is proven to ease stress. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, “music is an effective stress reducer in both healthy individuals and people with health problems… Research finds that listening to soothing music can decrease blood pressure, heart rate, and anxiety levels in heart patients.”

In fact, listening to music can help students academically as well, as music improves cognitive ability, memory, and motivation. When studying, listening to music reduces test anxiety — according to USA Today, “one study found that music’s effect on anxiety levels is similar to the effect of getting a massage.”

Most importantly, music is a vital form of entertainment for most students. Listening to music can be fulfilling in itself, and students can also bond over their favorite artists and albums.

Overall, whether it be for health or social-emotional reasons, music is an important aspect of students’ daily lives.
