Maintaining Adequate Fitness during Quarantine

By: Andy Chen

Whether you’re an accomplished athlete, or you haven’t been to the gym in the past few months, it’s usually difficult to stay motivated to exercise or eat healthy during the current COVID-19 pandemic. Despite this, maintaining a relatively healthy lifestyle is especially important right now — here are some pointers to keep you on track.

First off, set a weekly schedule to outline when you exercise. At the minimum, you should be exercising three times a week for 30-minute periods, although exercising daily would be optimal. Creating a routine is key to staying motivated during this monotonous quarantine period, and while it may be hard to adjust to a schedule at first, it’ll be worth the struggle once you get the hang of it.

In addition to having a schedule, it’s also important to establish an appropriate workout routine. Different workouts benefit different parts of the body, so you should learn multiple routines and switch between them regularly. A good place to start would be with CrossFit or Fitness Blender on YouTube. Both resources offer a variety of workouts that vary in intensity in purpose — whether you’re looking for an intense 10-minute ab workout or a 50-minute cardio workout, they’ve got what you’re looking for.

When planning workouts, it’s important to set goals for yourself and gradually increase the intensity or length of your workouts. For example, if you plan to exercise through running, you could increase the distance or speed at which you run at daily or weekly intervals, so as to continue to challenge yourself. By doing this, you’re likely to increase your fitness level rather than simply maintain or decrease it — just in time for your summer bod.

Healthy eating habits are also vital, but it can be hard to find worthwhile meals when grocery stores are empty and restaurants are mostly closed. As such, cooking can prove to be a rewarding opportunity, as you’ll learn to create homemade dishes that are both tasty and nutritious. If you don’t know how to cook, this quarantine period might be a blessing in disguise, as it is the perfect opportunity to learn how to cook effectively.

Exercising regularly and eating healthily may seem challenging at first, but it’s especially important to remain fit during the current pandemic in order to preserve a strong mind and body. You can do it!
