Detoxification

By Bill Chang

Your body is fighting a lifelong war: not with other people or anything of that scale, but on a cellular level. Toxins, substances that do harm to your body, contaminate your everyday belongings, and enter your body through food, water, air, clothes, or anything you are in contact with. Some common toxins are part of the food itself, like certain components that make up wheat, while others can contaminate the air you breathe, like the common house mold, which contains mycotoxin that literally means “fungus poison”.

Removing toxins from the body is a process called detoxification. If we are exposed to all sorts of toxins like environmental pollutants, carcinogens, heavy metals, industrial waste, preservatives and pesticides, and more for an extended period of time, those toxins can affect our metabolism, immune system, behavior, and even inflict certain diseases. Mycotoxin, for example, is a damaging compound produced by various species of mold.  It can cause cancer, heart disease, kidney and liver failure, insomnia, stunted growth, miscarriage, and decreased brain function when an excess of these toxins are stored in the cells and tissues of the body.

When our body loaded with toxins, it doesn’t function very well. We may have headaches, digestive disorders, a lack of energy, and many sleep problems. Memory may be enhanced and depression may be eased as the result of a detoxification process. We will also have mental, physical, and emotional energy after detoxifying. There are many reports of better sleeping habits after a detoxification.

The immune system is our front line of defence against diseases and infections, so we must do everything we can to support this system. A compromised immune system makes us vulnerable to colds and flus, affecting our quality of life and productivity. Since 60% of our immunity comes from our guts and detoxifying helps the digestive function as well as guts reconditioning, regular detoxing helps strengthen immune system functioning and fights off infection.

Lastly, when the body’s systems are overhauled, a shift also occurs with our mental and emotional states. We can deal with more when our minds are clear and grounded. We can make better decisions, analyze accurately, and see things differently. Our digestive, nervous, and hormonal systems were designed to work together to achieve optimum health. If we overload them with toxins and unhealthy foods, these systems don’t work as well as they should and we become sicker and sicker. When we do detoxify, it will not only help our systems function properly but also bring balance back to our mental state.

The best way to commence detoxification of our bodies is to start a diet.

Even a light diet reduces the amount of environmental toxins entering your body. But not everyone can bear the burden of refraining from eating some foods. You can just avoid consuming or coming into contact with substances you know are not good for you. Over time, detoxification can prove to be a refreshing moment for one’s life.
